free patent lawyers

African-American women are running to be judicial candidates in Harris County Texas. They first met at a Democratic Party gathering on January 18. They both agreed to run for office if given the opportunity. Their candidacies may surprise you, but they are all capable of doing the job. We will show you why these women are the best candidates to fill the Harris County judicial positions. Before you can understand their identities, however, it is important to first identify them.

Women judges

Harris County voters elected 19 African American women to the judicial post in 2018. Many of these new Judges met for the very first time at an event hosted by the Democratic Party. The women hope that their presence at the courtroom will reduce racial inequalities. Women judges have the unique opportunity of making a difference in people's lives. They are the ones who set a tone in courtrooms and make hearings fair.

In spite of all the bad news, Connecticut Trans-Advocacy Coalition was happy to support the election of 19 African-American women to Harris County Criminal Court at Law No. 12. They were part of "Black Girl Magic", a campaign featuring women. The ads showed all Harris County judges. There were two of them who lost their bids on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. They both retained their current jobs as judges, but made sure to include their peers' voices in their campaigns.

Pandemic-induced frustrations

The list of inmates facing court proceedings in Harris County is long, and most of them are facing violent charges. In certain cases, the county has placed an inmate's case on hold. The state and county elected officials thought about releasing the prisoners to try to prevent the spread. In a virtual court hearing it was revealed that only seven inmates of the 60 had been released.

Additionally, the COVID era and recent pandemic have led to a rise in criminal cases. County courts were forced into finding safe ways of conducting trials and many criminal cases were halted throughout the pandemic. This caused delays and an increase of COVIDs in Harris County by more than 35%.

Backlog of felonies that are still being processed

According to Harris County's District Attorney's Office, Harris County has a backlog of felonies. The backlog has now reached 135,000 cases. It is almost five years in length. This is a much larger number than people might expect, especially when considering Hurricane Harvey's impact and the COVID-19 pandemic. The backlog will decrease in the future, but The Forward Times will continue to examine how law enforcement agencies cooperate with the courts and what resources are being used to close the gap.

In an effort to reduce the backlog, Harris County leaders approved a resolution calling on the Texas Legislature to create another district criminal court. The backlog has caused a shortage of resources for local prosecutors. Kim Ogg, district attorney, stated her office would prioritize cases involving violent offenses. Jose Hidalgo, District Attorney, called the backlog "an urgent situation."

Education of judges

Despite the recent spike in homicides the area has yet not seen major reforms to its criminal justice system. Harris County judges have worked to improve the situation for residents. Judge Holly Williamson, the new Justice of Peace for Harris County, was sworn into office in January. Prior to this, she was a federal, state, district, and JP judge. With a budget of more than 1.3 million dollars, she oversees over 20,000 cases per year, including civil and criminal matters, bench and jury trials, traffic offenses, hot check and probable cause hearings, and truancy court.

Judge Jackson has served as a mentor to at risk youths and is actively involved in many community service organizations. She is a lifelong member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, as well as a member of the Houston Chapter of Links, Inc., where she chairs the Services to Youth program. She is also a member of Lakewood Church and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
